Covergirl Taking a Stand Against Animal Testing – The Latest & Largest Makeup Brand to be Leaping Bunny Certified in 2020
Today Covergirl announced that they’ve officially received Leaping Bunny certification from Cruelty Free International. This makes Covergirl the largest makeup brand to receive certification. (Until now, The Body Shop was probably the most well known cosmetics brand to be Leaping Bunny Certified.)
Covergirl is owned by Coty, which has also stated that at least one more of their brands will be certified by 2020. (The company also owns brands like Clairol, Rimmel London and Sally Hansen.) But take note: Coty doesn’t test on animals; they just haven’t had any brands Leaping Bunny Certified. That’s because the Leaping Bunny certification is a fairly rigorous process. It involves a thorough audit of the brand’s supply chain and ingredients before certifying that Covergirl products and ingredients are not tested on animals either by Coty or its suppliers.
According to a press release from Coty, the company is taking a stand with the aim to end animal testing for cosmetics globally. “Consumers expect brands to be leaders for positive change so today Covergirl is taking a stand about making cruelty free cosmetics a mainstream reality. We know we are not alone in wanting a beauty industry that is free from animal cruelty and, working with Cruelty Free International, invite others to join us in turning these conversations into action,” Ukonwa Ojo, Chief Marketing Officer, Coty Consumer Beauty, said in a statement.
Expect other mass market cosmetics companies to follow suit.
